Torro-Flor sets new win-streak record

With her three-set victory over Colombian Mariana Duque-Marino in the second round of the $50,000 tournament in Saint-Gaudens, France on Thursday, the recently turned 23-year-old Maria-Teresa “Tita” Torro-Flor gave herself a belated birthday gift as she surpassed Casey Dellacqua’s 31-match winning streak record at ITF Pro Circuit tournaments.

Torro-Flor's win brought an end to Dellacqua's ITF Pro Circuit women's record which has stood for just over three years, but the start of the Spaniard’s win streak actually dates back to June 2012, one month after Dellacqua’s own record-breaking run came to an end.

“I'm very happy to make the new record," said Torro-Flor. "It’s always a pleasure to play ITF [events], here is where everything started.”

Since her last defeat on the ITF Pro Circuit in a semifinal encounter with Ukrainian Olga Savchuk in the Moroccan city of Casablanca in May 2012, Torro-Flor has won an incredible 70 sets from 78 played culminating in the Saint-Gaudens title on Sunday.

There were a few nervy moments throughout this record breaking run though and on four occasions she found herself having to come from behind to maintain the winning sequence. In her second match in Saint-Gaudens, Mariana Duque-Marino came very close to ending her record bid and leaving her tied with Dellacqua’s 31 wins. The two players fought out a tense final set tiebreaker which finished 8-6 in the Spaniard’s favour.

October 2012 saw Torro-Flor win her last ITF Pro Circuit title, in Sant Cugat, Spain, and move on to 30 consecutive wins. This was, prior to competing this week, to be her last appearance on the ITF Pro Circuit as she concentrated on the WTA Tour events.

During her two and half year absence from ITF Pro Circuit play she made her debut for the Spanish Fed Cup team (securing her nation the victory over Ukraine in 2013), won three WTA doubles titles and in May 2013 claimed a major scalp in the opening round of the WTA Madrid tournament when posting, as a qualifier, a 62 75 win over 2010 Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone. Defeat followed though in the next round to Marion Bartoli who would go on to win the Wimbledon title just over eight weeks later.

A singles ranking of 47 was achieved in early May 2014, a ranking which to this day remains her career high, and in April of last year she captured her first WTA singles title in a three sets defeat of Swiss player Romina Oprandi in Marrakech, Morocco.
